Most people say they are a leader by saying that they are leading a group or event but don’t really possess leadership traits unlike Colin Powell who is all about leadership and its traits. During his second tour in during the Vietnam War, Powell was involved in a near fatal helicopter crash and rescued two other comrades from the burning helicopter along with his own injuries which earned him the Soldier’s Medal (A&E Bio). Carrying out that heroic act took a great deal of courage from Powell. He rescued them with horrifying possibilities of the helicopter exploding during the process or getting captured/killed by VC guerrillas. Even though with the fearful possibility that could happen, he overcame that and went for his fellow soldiers first which also leads to another trait of unselfishness. He thought of his fellow soldier’s lives before him and took care of them. He had the choice of abandoning them for his own life but he did not which shows true leadership. Powell also shows leadership traits by his quote, “Leadership is solving problems. The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership” (Brainy Quotes). What Powell's quote meant is that as a successful leader people depend on you for various reasons. People will depend on you to help them, complete a certain task, and several other scenarios if you are a leader. In Powell’s case if people can’t depend on him or you anymore then you failed your subordinates. As a leader people need to depend on you because they look up to you so you need to fulfill their needs. Powell is excellent at demonstrating how a leader is suppose to lead correctly.
